Why Is Brain Health So Important?
Our brain is the primary control centre of our human vessel. It communicates with not only our entire physical body via the spinal cord, but with our experience of reality as a whole. When the energy in our brain isn't flowing efficiently, it can disrupt many — and potentially all — aspects of our life.
The brain is an incredible supercomputer that governs the way we think, learn, create memories, make decisions, and integrate our everyday reality. It is also directly connected to how we behave, communicate, physically move, connect to others, express our emotions, and show up wholly and authentically in the world.
So, since our brain is this incredible supercomputer, shouldn't it be able to completely heal itself? Well, a beautiful way to look at this is through human nature itself. We as humans need data and feedback from our outer reality to know whether our actions are aligned with our highest good, so that we can make better choices going forward. It is how we learn, adapt in this world, and become better people — and the brain works in exactly the same way, but unfortunately, it wasn’t created with a built in mirror to reference its own actions. So when the brain receives real-time feedback about how it is operating through neurofeedback training, it can sense whether a shift might support it in functioning and self-regulating more efficiently.

What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a brain training system that gives the brain real-time feedback about how it is operating. It supports the brain and central nervous system in self-regulation and creating new, more easeful neural pathways.
The NeurOptimal® technology used at Humans Recovery understands the mathematics and language of the brain. Its design is rooted in the understanding that when the brain is given information about its own patterns, it can use that information to self-correct and reorganize. The technology reads the unique electrical patterns of an individual's brain in real-time and communicates directly back to their central nervous system through an audio track.
When NeurOptimal® detects a shift in the brain's electrical activity — a moment of change — a brief interruption occurs in the audio, similar to a record skipping. This interruption is a gentle, direct communication to the nervous system that something has shifted, offering a quiet invitation for the brain to pause, notice, and choose its next step with greater awareness.
Why Does This Work?
Our brain is naturally incredibly flexible and resilient. It is always searching for the most efficient and optimal way to process reality. For instance, if we were to do the same task ten times, the brain's natural inclination toward efficiency means it will approach the task slightly differently each time, always moving toward smoother, more easeful processing.
However, depending on one's life circumstances, experiences, and environment, the brain can become stuck — relying on neural patterns that once helped it survive, but that no longer serve the fullness of who we are. The feedback offered through the audio interruption acts as a real-time reflection, gently and clearly creating a pause in those patterns. This gives the brain an opening to make a new choice, supporting the central nervous system in returning to its natural state of flexibility and resilience.
Neuroplasticity and It’s Role.
Neuroplasticity, put simply, is the brain's ability to adjust and adapt in response to our environment. One of the most profound things about neuroplasticity is that it supports us through even the most difficult experiences. Whether someone has faced emotional or physical trauma, injury, or prolonged stress, the brain's neuroplasticity will rewire itself to help the individual cope and survive.
This function — though extraordinary in terms of survival — can continue to shape the way we operate long after we are no longer in danger. The brain keeps running the wiring it built during those hard times, even when we no longer need it. The beautiful thing, though, is that neuroplasticity works in both directions. The very same function that wired the brain for survival is also what allows it to rewire toward health, wholeness, and ease.
That healing and growth happens through learning, new environments, movement, rest, mindfulness, self-care — and brain training with neurofeedback.
Another Interesting Fact About The Brain.
Scientists once believed that synaptic pruning — the brain's natural process of clearing away less useful neural pathways — only occurred in childhood. Modern research has since shown that this pruning continues throughout adulthood. And fascinatingly, it is encouraged when new, healthier neural pathways are being formed. As the brain strengthens new patterns, the older, less useful ones are naturally cleared away. This tells us something deeply empowering: no matter your age, your brain is always capable of shifting, adapting, and growing toward greater wellbeing.
How Often Is Neurofeedback Needed?
Every person's journey is completely unique. The frequency and number of sessions that feels right will depend on your individual needs, your nervous system, your history, and what you're hoping to experience.
Think of it like going to the gym. The more consistently you train, especially in the beginning, the more you support your brain in building and strengthening new pathways. Unlike muscles, though, healthy neural pathways don't break down when you stop — once they're formed, the brain naturally feeds and reinforces them. Some people find that a focused period of training creates a shift that stays with them. Others enjoy returning periodically for deeper work or maintenance, months or even years later.
That said, even a single session can be a profound act of self-care. While one session alone may not create majorchanges in your neural pathways, it is a beautiful way to wind down, find your centre, and bring yourself back into a deep state of rest, restoration, and regulation in just 33 minutes.
Who Can Benefit From Neurofeedback?
Ultimately, neurofeedback is for all people who are interested in developing new, efficient, neural pathways, and would benefit from strengthening their central nervous systems ability to self regulate, which in this day and age, is most of us.
Neurofeedback has also been shown to be very supportive for the central nervous system of those individuals who are showing symptoms of, or are diagnosed with;
ADHD
Autism
Addictions
Anxiety
Behavioural Disorders
Brain Fog
Depression
Learning Disabilities
Memory Loss
OCD
Physical Coordination Limitations
Psychedelic Abuse / Lack Of Integration
PTSD
Seizures
Sleep Issues / Insomnia
Speaking Limitations
Stress
Traumatic Brain InJuries
And More!
Neurofeedback can support individuals with processing and integrating repressed emotions due to trauma and grief.
It is even known to support athletes, musicians, and any other professionals who are looking to gain optimal performance through strengthening their neural functioning.
What to Expect
in a Session
Each session will begin with setting a clear intention for what you are hoping to shift in your life.
Next, we will set you up in a relaxing position to prepare you for the experience.
6 small sensor pads will be gently placed onto your head and ears with a conductive paste that allows the pads to stick comfortably.
These sensors are connected to the NeurOptimal® technology which will be reading your real-time brain frequencies and communicating back to the brain via interruptions in the music throughout the whole session.
There is also a visual component to this experience that is dependant on which location you have your session (only available at Lantzville location). It is not necessary to use the visuals, but it really enhances the experience. The visuals will be projected onto the ceiling.
All you do is sit back relax, and enjoy the 33 minute meditative experience!
The amount of skipping and the length of audio silence will vary for each individual.
Each session, including set-up and integration will be an hour long, unless extra integration time is needed
*Human’s Recovery is based out of two separate clinics on Vancouver Island. One location is in Lantzville and the other is in Nanoose Bay. The Neurofeedback technology is easy to transport, so there is also the option for a “we come to you” service for those who are not able to make it to those locations.
